Interesting and intriguing, sure, but not altogether worth the while. It has elements of Lost (doubt vs. faith), but without any really gripping mysteries. The men behind the various curtains are similar and forgettable. There are shades of Stephen King, but unfortunately there’s only one Stephen King (who has written down-and-out black characters in much more memorable stories). Victor LaValle is a great guy and perhaps the next books in this series would be able to turn my thoughts around. Alas, I probably won’t check them out.
