This is drama that will truly disturb you. On a cold winter night, watch the 1966 movie version with a good bottle of wine at the ready. It’ll depress you to all hell but it will leave a mark on you, which is the goal of great fiction. The printed work is still good, but lacks a lot of the potency…. and all the ellipses can be immensely distracting…. it’s hard to read…. you know? But it’s still a classic that deserves the distinction, and if I ever get a chance to see a live production I’ll jump at it, with the Merlot tucked under my evening coat for the show.
