best 2008

Can’t go wrong with the Best American series, especially the Nonrequired Reading. Good fiction from this year is “The Elegant Rube” by Malerie Willens and “Ayana” by Stephen King. But the non-fiction is most memorable, with great pieces like Gene Weingarten’s “Pearls Before Breakfast” and George Saunders’ “Bill Clinton, Public Citizen.” Other noteworthy selections are “Best American Things for Sale That This Man on the Internet Will Sell You” and “Best American Diary of the Living Dead or: Are You There God? It’s Me. Also, a Bunch of Zombies.”
