Sherman Alexie’s first collection. Most of the stories are engrossing but some are a little thin. There are several recurring characters which is kind of cool at first, but they make appearances at different times in their lives and become indistinguishable. A lot of the prose is really great and poetic, but in some cases can distract from the story as a whole. But there’s still a lot of good stuff in here, and whether it’s read as one work or picked up for one five-page story, the reader can take something away. To get a feel for the subject and style, check out the memorable movie Smoke Signals.
