brief history

I had read the first chapter of Brockmeier’s book as a short story in an anthology when I was at university. From there, the story has been excellently expanded. Odd chapters deal with the city where the dead reside until the last person on earth who remembers them dies. Even chapters follow Laura Byrd, who is trying to survive alone in Antarctica and is possibly the last human on Earth. The book is a fresh take on the idea of the afterlife and the impact of a single person. Great book to read on the bus or at a diner, wherever people are humming.
