Sam Beam says that every good song is about sex, death, or God, and the best ones are about all three. This is King’s opera, and he delivers on these themes in intense and shiver-inducing ways in a tale about growing up in America. By the end, you forget the book has anything to do with a dancing clown, and you realize it has everything to do with love, desire, memory, childhood, the force of the Other moving around us and through us like one big wheel. It’s a book that has everything to do with everything.
